The Bighorn Sheep lives in mountains ranging from 5000-6500 feet and it migrates up to 60 miles, depending on the season. The horn of a Bighorn Sheep is a special trophy as the average expected size ranges from 36? to 38?.
Hunting Season: August 1 ? September 20
In August the weather is usually the best of the mentioned season. It is then when you find the big rams in small groups, making the task of finding them a little bit more difficult, but easier to stalk.
The month of September is the best if you are looking for a prime hide. The weather conditions can be more difficult and delays must be accepted. But hunting is easier as the rams have started getting together in groups to prepare themselves for winter and the rut.
The hunting area is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Palana region, about 700 km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. The relief is of small mountains covered with bushes and wooded on the shores of rivers.
Method of hunting: Search and approach by caterpillar car, and hunting by stalking.
Number of hunters in a group: 2 hunters plus chief-hunter/interpreter/trophy-dresser/cook/interpreter
Accommodation in a very primitive hunting house or in a tent camp with wall tents for cooking/eating, screen lean-to for sitting.
How to get there:
- from Anchorage* to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy by air-liner
*also accessible from other cities
- from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy to Palana airport and back (1.5 hr per way) by local, small twin engine (16 places) aircraft
- from Palana to hunting grounds (up to 1 hr per way) and back by helicopter.
